Ski & Snowboard
The Italian side of the mountain - Sella Nevea.
Kanin/Sella ski area lies high above Slovenia's Soca river valley. From late November to early May, Kanin/Sella offers winter sports on the highest ski slopes in Slovenia (lifts rise up to 2300m above the soca river valley) and down the opposite side of the mountain to the ski area of Sella Nevea in Italy.
While most of Slovenia's ski area's are fairly low altitude, tree lined slopes, Kanin offers a true 'big mountain' experience with the main part of the ski area lying high above the tree line. With uncrowded slopes and non existant lift lines, Kanin provides a very relaxed snowboard or ski experience. The area caters well for everyone from beginners to advanced skiers and snowboarders - Kanin has hosted numerous competitions including the infamous 'Redbull Extreme' contest and more recently the 'Quicksilver Freeride battle'. The amount and quality of the lift accessed off piste is awsome - the area is like a giant fun park with jumps, drops, chutes, steeps and wide open powder fields littering the in bounds area. The area offers an excellent beginners area and ski / snowboard school, with various ski hire shops in the town. The instructors speak excellent english and are very enthusiastic to get you ripping up the slopes in the shortest possible time! For experienced riders wanting to escape the crowds but still have excellent terrain, this is the place for you. This is the only ski area in Slovenia connected to a ski area in another country. A 6 day lift pass also includes 1 day free at the nearby Italian resort of Tarvisio.
Guided off piste/ski touring
For advanced riders there are excellent area's of off piste within the ski area and ski touring and off piste guiding available in the surrounding peaks - be warned, this is only for people who are physically fit and confident in riding extreme terrain. The resort offers a massive area of out of bounds off piste that is easily accessable from the top station, with descents back to the bottom of the ski area or over the Glacier (lowest ice field in Europe) on the Italian side of the mountain. These routes should only be attempted with a professional guide, bookable through us with a local agency (avalanche transiever/snow shovel/probe/backpack and helmet included in price). There is also the Prevala snowboard park for anyone wanting to brush up on their jumping skills.
